The original pole was raised jointly by two chiefs, Tu’pesu and Wawralaw, in 1855 or 1885 at Gitseguekla (Skeena Crossing)

Several old poles were removed for preservation from Gitanyow (formerly known as Kitwancool) in 1958 and replaced by replicas. This is a version of the pole named Skim-sim and Will-a-daugh belonging to Chief Wiha (Wee-kha, Ernest Smith),

The original pole stood in the village of Gitseguekla (Skeena Crossing) on the upper Skeena River. It was carved around 1900 in memory of a chief known as Wistis

It was raised by a man named Checkgath around 1880 as a memorial to his wife and shows some of Checkgath’s family crests. The original pole is now in the entrance lobby of the RBC museum.

The original pole stood at t’anuu ‘llnagaay (eelgrass town) in front of a house named House that Makes a Noise, a large six-beamed house owned by Gwiskunas, a member of the Those Born at Qadasgo Creek lineage of the Raven clan of the Haida.

The original poles were moved to inside storage and replaced by replica versions carved by Martin and others working under his direction, including Henry Hunt and Hunt’s sons, Tony and Richard.

It is dedicated to the Coast Salish people on whose ancestral lands Thunderbird Park is located, and honours the Hunt and Whonnock (Wanukw) families of the Kwakwaka’wakw carvers.

The original pole in the A’wa’etłala village of Dzawadi in Knight Inlet had five figures but only the top three were acquired by Charles F. Newcombe when he visited the site in 1913. The original pole was erected in Thunderbird Park in 1941 (RBCM 1859).

Originally carved in 1979, the pole was recently brought down for conservation treatment. Hunt repaired and repainted it, and the Royal BC Museum took the opportunity to relocate it.
